Kids’ Hope USA

Kids’ Hope USA is a mentoring program that pairs adult mentors from our church with elementary school children from Washington Writers’ Academy. Teachers identify children from their classrooms who could benefit from one-on-one attention and encouragement and refer them to be matched with a Kids’ Hope mentor. Each mentor must commit to coming to school for a one hour session with the same child each week throughout the school year. Mentors take more of the role of friend and encourager than that of an academic tutor. They work to establish a relationship of trust with their student through weekly interaction with him or her.

A training session for mentors provides mentors with information and a variety of ideas for the hour long sessions. New mentors are always welcome and encouraged. Westwood would like to make an impact on the children of Washington Writers’ academy by making a difference in the lives of children one at a time. If you would be able to give an hour a week to become a mentor, or would like to become a prayer partner who prays behind the scenes for a mentor-student relationship, please contact Becky Veenstra, Kids’ Hope USA director, at the church office.
